How to Style A Pony Tail Hair with Runway Beauty Tips from the Paul Smith Fall 2012 Fashion Show…

THE INSPIRATION:

For Fall / Winter 2012, we were inspired by the strong yet graceful individuality of a woman’s profile. The androgynous yet feminine feel of the collection was accented by soft, natural looking styles and the smooth, healthy texture of the hair.

THE LOOK:

“We wanted to create a unique shape that was more masculine from the front, yet essentially feminine in profile,” explained Peter Gray. “Tight sides worked to emphasize the over-lapping softness. From the front, the style looked tailored and narrow while from the profile, it flowed into a dramatic, low-rounded convex shape that came together in a low ponytail that was sensuously positioned away from the neck so the hair would flow over the high collars.”

“I love the low, rounded volume of these looks. It was important that the lift wasn’t high up on the crown in a sixties kind of way, but much lower and more modern. I structured a backcombed base under the surface to give the hair solidity within a soft fluffy surface. We created a soft, free look — almost next-day hair — that appeared very sexy and natural.”

HOW THE LOOK WAS CREATED:

“The hair was first brushed out thoroughly and small sections were taken to enable the spray to reach the roots.

I sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong directly on the root area of each section and then massaged it in with my fingers to lift the hair and to set the base for a soft, textured look. I then blow dried the sprayed root sections to heat-set them for volume.

Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong was the perfect tool for this look. Its lightweight mist dispersed evenly throughout the hair to hold the fluff of backcombed strands that supported the low, rounded shape positioned at the nape of the neck. It holds without weighing the hair down, without build-up, while reducing frizz – all invaluable when creating this kind of volume.

To create the flat shape through the sides, I created an inch-wide section of hair above each ear and sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong from root to tip, then combed through using a fine comb.

I combed the hair back and over the small section left behind the ears on both sides. I then secured the two sections at the base of the neck and tied them together with a fabric-covered elastic band.

Once the two pieces were anchored, the remaining hair through the back of head was sectioned and backcombed to create the low rounded look.

Using a Moroccanoil XLPRO Paddle Brush, I lightly brushed over the top surface and created a clean side parting. I brought all the remaining hair to the nape of the neck, and secured it using a hair band, making sure the low, rounded shape was well-defined.

I then sectioned a small piece of hair from the ponytail and sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong on it, then carefully wrapped the hair around the fabric-covered elastic band to secure and conceal it. The ends were then lightly curled with a 1 inch curling iron.

I then sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong onto my fingers, and scrunched the ponytail to give it additional texture. I also used Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to give the surface of the hair a little more texture and hold.

Spraying hairspray directly onto the fingers, I ran them through the ponytail to create a lived-in texture. I then also used Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream throughout the ponytail to define the curls a bit.

Next, I curled a few random sections around the face and directed them backward, to make sure the hair stayed off the face.

To finish, I sprayed Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray over the surface of the hair and ran my fingers through the hair to give a tousled result.”
