Cannes Do Chic- White is summer’s new black

I'll Have What She's Having: A summer romance with my dry cleaner White is definitely on trend for summer. But I have to admit a slow love to ditch my go-to black beyond white t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, and classic, crisp white shirts (follow the links for style tips). Maybe it was last week in the California sunshine where I lost count on the plethora of white jeans,  but these Cannes Do Chic snaps certainly make the case for adding something white to your summer wardrobe. My favorite red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival  offers plenty of styling inspiration for every occasion by way of (clockwise) Cate Blanchett in a Giorgio Armani white suit, Chrystele Saint Louis Augustin in a midriff-baring bralette and

Pleasingly Pleated

I'm not always a fan of "big" dresses, and glittery shoes typically look a few seasons back for me. But put it altogether on Marion Cotillard and the result is sublime. Styled by the wrong hands, a plisse pleated dress like this can be overwhelming. But the simplicity and ease of Cotillard's hair, makeup, and confidence make this Dior Haute Couture look stellar. Another lesson learned in that it's not what you wear but how you wear it.  More from the best of Cannes Do Chic series to help you get it together with ease. Cannes Do Chic: How to modernize a full skirt flare dress a la Chiara Mastroianni

I'll Have What She's Having:  A classic flare dress that looks fresh and modern From our series of the  best of Cannes Do Chic to help you get it together with ease... I love a flare dress. Chiara Mastroianni's (daughter of Catherine Deneauve and Marcello Mastroianni) nonchalent edge modernizes her 50's silhouette flare dress from Dior. The cut boasts a certain timeless grown-up sophistication that works so well with both a curvy figure and for those looking to create a curvy figure. But, it can look old if not styled with the right modern sensibilites. [box] Non sequitor little girl trivia time: Truth be told, I had a big childhood crush on Marcello Mastroianni and old Italian movies.  If I was a blonde, I wanted

Are you game for vintage style? Try a full 50’s inspired skirt [HINT: It’s all over Cannes]

I have rule around here about never wearing vintage too literally when it's a style that YOU wore in its first fashion outing as it seriously dates you... in other words, makes you look o-l-d. So if you watched I Love Lucy in anything other than a rerun, skip this look. But for the rest of us, why not try a midi-length, flippy & full 50's inspired skirt for some summer dash?   It looks great as an airy summer dress or for a big night out. And you know I've been loving this look for awhile.-- S.H. Jasmine Trinca in Miu Miu (left) and Naomi Watts in Dolce & Gabbana (right) Cannes Do Chic: After seasons of body-con &

Let's face it, a wedding dress is a dress that you get married wearing. It has NOTHING to do with what department the dress came from (mine was vintage and simply ivory) and EVERYTHING to do with what you feel pretty in and will want to look at for decades to come in photographs. So, think out of the bridal box! Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger on the red carpet stairs at Cannes- rice not included. It's white night on the red carpet as of late as white is one

Stylist Advice: You can do this! Audrey Tautou’s easy fitting pants and a girly blouse for French chic élan

Loooove the mix of an otherwise girly ruffled blouse with man-tailored pants. It's the unexpected hit of French chic that you can add to your wardrobe.
I'll Have What She's Having: A lively masculine/feminine French chic mix that hits smart notes by way of a soft blouse and tailored, easy fitting pants We should really call this post, "mix this DON'T match that" as  it's the unexpected combination that works so well. Love the mix of an otherwise girly ruffled blouse with man-tailored pants spotted on French actress Audrey Tautou. It's the unexpected hit of French chic élan that you can add to your wardrobe. Pairing something frilly with something sweet can get a bit too saccharine, while mixing too many man tailored pieces together can get a bit butch. French actress Audrey Tautou poses during the photocall of "Therese Desqueyroux" presented out of competition at the 65th Cannes film

How to wear pastels and look chic not chintzy- look at Tilda Swinton & Marion Cotillard for style ideas

Tilda Swinton poses at the "Moonrise Kingdom" photocall during the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival
I'll Have What She's Having: Sophisticated dusty pale colors that never scream juvenile You must know that I'm not a fan of grown up women wearing baby pastels... in one wrong wimpy shade, you instantly take a hit to your personal power right down to that of  a kid. >>> MORE: Do you need more style inspiration?
