FALL 2012 Top Trends:
Where: Jewels and Heavy Ornamentation
Who: Prada (above), Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, Miu Miu
Move over minimalism as ornate embellishment, from a little to a treasure chests worth, added an immediate opulence to the new baroque embroideries and themes of the season. From jeweled collars to bags, to simple shoes, exaggerated jewel motifs lent an idiosyncratic touch to many of the collections.
Adding a whimsical yet strong-looking element to the season, elaborate excesses didn’t end with just clothes. Forever the mad-maximalist, Miuccia Prada sent a troop of models down the runway with jeweled eyebrows at Miu Miu to close the season. And for a shiny moment, extravagance seems irresistable again. This season let a decadent dress speak for itself for jewels make for radiant alternatives to optical prints -or so the buzz goes.

What: The Big Sweater
Where: Balenciaga, Stella McCartney, Celine
Throughout the season designers offered women an array of considerate choices when contemplating new workplace options. Paired with tights and loafers, or femme a-line skirts, the oversized sweater makes for one cozy essential.
Sculptural with a sci-fi, urbane minded spirit, knits impress with powerful shapes that transform classic silhouettes into something quite captivating.
What: Black Lace & Noir Velvet
Where: Etro, Nina Ricci, Dolce & Gabbana
Ever since Miuccia Prada, forever the trailblazer, sent black guipure lace down the runway in 2008, we’ve seen every house fashion its own takes on the tried & true, ultra-femme standby.
Paying a nod to the quirky 50’s notes running throughout the season, darkly romantic, statement blacks conjure strength. With contrasts of delicate sheer layers to demystify deep noir, Victorian references are at once modern when realized in paired down shapes. Quite seductive after seasons of bare-boned basics.
