The Joy of Fashion: Good Fun, and Art in the Mix

Fashion’s Night Out- Downtown fashion and art scene…

Last night was Vogue’s “Fashion’s Night Out,” a city-wide shopping event with hundreds of shops staying open til 11pm, providing music & cocktails to not only get customers motivated to shop, but to also remind them of the joy of fashion itself.

And with the state of today’s economy, it was a rather refreshing and well-planned initiative to get people excited.

I didn’t personally see many cash registers buzzing, but what I did love was the communal air it gave the city of New York, where the streets were filled with well suited crowds of people, all out for a good time and a good cause.

After spending the early morning & afternoon engulfed in the world of fashion with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Bryant Park, I thought it would be a nice change of scenery to check out some of the great art openings & events in Chealsea. Like fashion, the art world also starts it’s season in September and my first stop was the highly anticipated opening of Juergen Teller’s “Paradis” at Lehman Maupin, where there so many well dressed patrons in attendance that I almost forgot to look at the art.

Longchamps

All of their drool-worthy avant-garde accoutrements got my conscience back on fashion so I headed to Soho, where I personally think New York’s best shops are housed. I started at Longchamp not only because I love Lykke Li (who was a guest dj alongside a jazz band) but also because Longchamp’s deco inspired curved shop is so beautiful that it’s great to get any excuse to hang out there.

Then I headed to Opening Ceremony’s jam-packed block party where there were about a thousand of the cities best dressed citizens with designers Proenza Schouler and Kate & Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte humbly mingling with the crowd. Seeing designers of that status interspersed with throngs of shoppers got me thinking that no matter what the economy is like, fashion is about good fun and I had a beautiful time. – Naveed Hussain
