  • Red Carpet Hair- French Chic Chignon for Julianna Margulies at the Golden Globes

When too many actresses chose to over do their hair, here’s one look that keeps it simple and chic

YES, please do try this classic French chignon at home…

There absolutely can be too much of a good thing!

Sorry to report, but there were far too many actresses who opted for big fashion and big hair at Sunday’s Golden Globes… a fashion victim combination that did nothing for the star herself but became a walking ad for the heavy-handed stylists who put her together.

Confession: I was waiting for a one actress to wear a diamond studded sandwich board mentioning all her fashion credits.

In all that frou-frou frippery, a few chose the minimalist and pretty chic way, like Claire Danes, Emma Stone and Julianna Marguiles. In their less is more style, they absolutely stood out.

I loved the minimalism of Marguiles’ vintage Yves Saint Laurent gown, but frankly would have added one modern and unexpected piece of jewelry- like a bold YSL geode necklace or earrings from the resort collection just to pop it a wee a bit.

What I also love is the ease and simplicity of her hairstyle that you can try at home, not just for a red carpet event, but for any day that you feel you want to get
your hair off your shoulders a bit.

We’ve got the inside tips on how to do a braided chignon a la Julianna Margulies from hairstylist Matthew Monzon.

“We wanted to go with something simple, chic, and somewhat understated,” says Monzon who offers these simple hairstyling steps:

    • We started off with clean damp hair.
    • I took Leonor Greyl Sérum de Soie Sublimateur and worked it into the hair through the ends.
    • Then, I blow-dried straight with a round brush to give some volume through the top.
    • Once dry, I pulled the hair back into a low ponytail and secured with a bungee-band and did a fishtail braid to create a bit of texture and interest to the chignon.
    • Once finished with the braid I wrapped the braid and pinned it into a chignon.
    • I finished off the look with Elnet hairspray.
