I’ll Have What She’s Having: The best Emmy style of clean chic red carpet stunners
You know that I’m generally not jacked up about red carpet fashion. Too often, it’s overdone celebrities wearing costumes that look like they were stolen from a five-year old’s fantasy dress up closet. OK, lucky for them that their stylist secured that fancy free dress for the night, but what does that have to do with YOU?
There was some of that schmaltz at tonight’s 65th Emmy Awards, for sure. But, I’ll ignore that.
What I don’t ignore are the few women who opted for stellar chic and clean lines that didn’t wear them. Stunning numbers that stood out in a sea of too much. And isn’t that what you want anyway?
Let’s discuss why these looks work.
The Reds…
WOW, just wow. Carla Gugino’s hot body illusion net dress played peekaboo in just that right places to be suggestive but not revealing. Soft waves, lots of lashes, and a nude lip down played the hotness in perfect balance.
Michelle Dockery in Prada has the fashion color combination touch, graphic lines and a full skirt that is very grown up glamour. Her short, sleek bob and natural makeup play up the surprise oversized bow at her neck. Just beautiful.
White and Black…
Kate Mara in a SciFi-esque illusion cut out and sleek bob with a smokey eye and nude lip create a stunner of a strong graphic statement. Who ever claimed that white was the absence of color? It’s the backdrop for sharp textural lushness.
Robin Wright and Amanda Peet have similar mock turtleneck looks (yes, for evening!) balanced by the surprise of sheer- lovely enough as a modern take on tabletop dressing- the neckline that looks so pretty when viewed across a dinner table or in deep conversation at a cocktail party. Both have simple, undone pulled back hair and wispy bangs to soften the high neck.
Elizabeth Moss had a regal Grace Kelly edge in the simplicity of her black and white gown that owed its pop of color to your vivid red lips and platinum short cut.
The Pales-
Zoey Deschanel in icy blue satin column with a 60s vibe- what an absolutely perfect look to suit her quirky personal style. The side slit, big bouncy hair calls an Audrey Hepburn – Natalie Woods mashup to mind. Sounds and looks great to me!
Nudes with illusion and texture were a common theme, best demonstrated by Claire Danes, Kerry Washington, and January Jones. Soft, bouncy hair, defined smokey eyes and understated jewelry kept the looks elegant and sophisticated rather than girly. Simply pretty.
