Runway Review: Heritage prairie inspiration with a dose of edge– and some of the best outerwear around.

Fall 2013 from Nicholas K. takes you to the wild west prairie days, roughed up with an ample amount of dark edginess to boot, and a dose of old-school 90’s heroin chic played up with goth-ish hair dye.

Sometimes a bit frightening! But not too terrifying, because the fabrications were flowy, easily draped on the body, and layered under soft furs and supple leathers which lends a needed soft side to the tough appeal of the overall look.

A rich palette of black, heather grey, cool sepia tones, and sandy beige fit the mood.

The washed silk easy pants and draped jersey tunic length tops could work as staples to pair with everything year-round.

All the outerwear pieces were incredible!

A long pieced leather trench with seam taping, full fur lining and wide funnel neck collar was a killer item in the line that will keep you warm and while radiating an urbane dose of cool. The long, asymmetrical wrapped and fitted leather mixed brushed wool coat makes for a bold, hard-egded statement and will look great with washed, skinny jeans.

Another notable outwear piece was a fairly classic twill, oversized utility jacket but with inside straps so you can take your coat off and wear it as a backpack; no more carrying your winter coat around or piling it on a chair.

Ombre tie dyes and long, open sweaters can work into the rest of your pre-exisisting wardrobe. A layered sequin and fringe tank added a feminine twist to the line, but not so workable with a barrel size cowboy hat!

As for the accessories, the leather holster-esque  fanny packs made for a considerable alternative to a purse while oversized hats on the other hand, didn’t make the cut, and there’s certainly no need to contemplate the turtle shell necklaces. Stick to the dramatic outerwear and sensuous, drapey knits from this collection.

On behalf of all the turtle lives lost for this line’s accessories, I would like to dedicate this piece to my dear pet turtle, Noodle. — Alix Kivlin
