STYLE YOUR SUCCESS, LIVE YOUR DREAM...

The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

The Perfect Gift to Bring Back from Paris

Look no further for some gift ideas that brim with Paris chic. Richard Nahem who designs custom walking tours of Paris helps a reader receive the perfect gift from Paris! Question: I have a fairly wealthy male friend who lives in Paris and Deauville, as well as Andorra. He is coming to visit in three weeks and wants to know what I want him to bring me from France. I don't want him to choose clothes for me, for obvious reasons-- what does he know and will it fit? What would be something totally cool that I could ask him to bring that not your typical girl from Kentucky would have? Scarf? Handbag? I just wanted to know what the

Manolo Blahnick hates celebrities

Prefers women with style to pointless girls. His shoes may be the coveted sign of status for the up-and-coming, wannabe, and flaunt it set, but Manolo Blahnick has a more honorable way of looking at the woman who wear his shoes. "I hate celebrities," he revealed to VOGUE.COM. "All those pointless girls - I won't name names, but you know who I mean. They are 'famous'. Ridiculous. I like women with style: actresses like Uma Thurman, icons like Audrey Hepburn. I like women with style to wear my shoes." Indeed, you can judge a man by his shoes. Bravo, Mr. Blahnick!

In Their Words: Fashion Designer Eyola opens her heart about her new collection

My fascination with the Victorian era continues with the new Octette in the Eyola family 'Tarcotsira Octette' inspired by Victorian Aristocrats' dress and lifestyle. I've written about the new octette from my heart! My fascination with the Victorian era continues with the new Octette in the Eyola family 'Tarcotsira Octette' inspired by Victorian Aristocrats' dress and lifestyle. Aristocratic women of this period were big on details especially when it came to accessorizing and one item that saw no boundaries was the bonnet. Bonnets were lavishly trimmed decorated with feather trimmings and flowers both of which feature in this Octette in the form of floral embroidery and a pheasant feather belt. Other influences of aristocrats fashion of the time includes the

Wear Colors Plucked from a Jewelry Box!

Rich Jewel Tones Enhance NeutralsWhat colors should I wear, you ask? The rich ones! Black may be the perfect core color to base a wardrobe but entertaining scrumptious jewel tones adds a modern sense of opulence without much effort. Plus, the lavish gem color palette that is flattering on most skin tones always conjures up images of elegance and luxury, so what's so bad about that? ??Introduce ruby, amethyst, teal, emerald, fire opal orange, amber, and sapphire hues as posh and polished color accents to your go-to neutrals. Dress Tips: Add one brilliant colored dress to wear with your go-to black jacket and black tights. In contrast, a jewel-toned jacket can top your charcoal pencil skirt or pants. A rich

My Wonderful World of Fashion, a coloring book for fashion addicts

A book for drawing, creating, and dreaming... and doodling while stuck on hold on the phone too! A book for drawing, creating, dreaming... and doodling while stuck on hold on the phone too! Yes, you can judge a book by its cover. There are some things that you really love for nothing more than their aesthetic. But when looks are combined with fun, hey that's something to toy with! My Wonderful World of Fashion, A Book for Drawing, Creating, and Dreaming by Nina Chakrabarti (Laurence King Publishing, U.K.) sets forth in a simple cover that recalls a bored student who ripped off the top of a composition book, scribbled all over it, and set it safe with some neon pink

Iris Apfel, Personal Style Inspiration on Exhibition

Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel There are times when we all get stuck in a style rut. Times when some of us even drop the ball on fashion altogether and settle for the humdrum, ill-fitting, and perfectly blah daily uniform simply because we don't have to think about it. Well, start thinking! Everyone needs a little inspiration here and there. A style muse to get your creative juices flowing, to rethink what you have at hand and what you really must add to your wardrobe for a little zing. Not necessarily something to copy, merely something to get you thinking about you, about the chances you take, and the image you set forth. Something, someone to make

Leopard doesn’t have to be tricky to wear.

What shoes to wear with a leopard dress?   I just bought this gorgeous leopard print dress and was curious about what kind of shoes to wear with it. The dress itself is on the shorter side (above the knee) but fits perfectly. I was thinking about wearing a pair of leopard print strappy sandals I found at Macy's with some sheer nude pantyhose. But perhaps leopard print shoes may be too much. What's your take??? Thanks! (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) Ah ha! Wearing more than one element of animal print at one time can take you from looking chic to looking like the crazy cat lady. Yes, it is possible to combine a wild kingdom of animal prints, mostly

Fashion Rocks Out with Heavy Metal

How to wear the metallic trend. No music skills required, just a lot of glam! Fashion is rocking out with heavy metal but it sure isn't about the hair bands. Just the hint of a rock and roll wild child with some big time designer edge! We're loving the elegant glitz of metallic fabrics and leathers for both day and night. They play out best when paired with something subtle, like khaki rolled hem pants and super platform bronze shoes or a metallic steel leather trench over a simple grey flannel pencil skirt. Black opaque tights tone down a lame or liquid bronze dress for something more date worthy. The key to avoid looking tacky is to not pile too

I’ll Have What She’s Having: Penelope Cruz Glams Up Biker Chic

How to wear a biker jacket and look chic, that's the question of the day! The iconic biker jacket always conjures up images of edgy, care-free style. What to wear to a formal but not fussy event can be tricky. Penelope Cruz seamlessly masters biker chic in an off-handed wearable glam way that is very European and quite simple to pull off. Take note! First off, authentic biker gear can get a bit too tough so opt for more stylized designer versions of the look that have the same edge with the addition of a fabulous and flattering cut. Think of your moto jacket as a layering piece and try a zippered vest under a soft jacket, like Penelope did
