STYLE YOUR SUCCESS, LIVE YOUR DREAM...

The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

Matching A Tie, Without A Sport Coat

I am a college student and going out to a nice dinner that requires me to dress up. I am not wearing a sportcoat, however, I am wearing black dress pants with a navy blue dress shirt. My question is what color tie should I wear? I have a stylish blue one, a nice gold-ish looking one, and a plain black one. (Flint, MI) It's hard to escape the image of randy school boy in his shirt and tie, but there certainly are plenty of situations where wearing a jacket is unnecessary (think lab coat), even though sporting a sportcoat will finish the look. When spurning a jacket, your tie acts as an anchor and introducing a third color, like

He has a mini-gadget for everything. Well, 007 inspiration for those things great and small must have been in the dreams over at Micro Vision Optical when they developed reading glasses so skinny that they slip into their own pen, mascara wand-size tube, or what could be confused as a silver-tone cigarette lighter case. No more apologizing when you can't read a menu in a restaurant so dimly lit that you need to bring Sebastian, the seeing eye spaniel along to aid in negotiating your Jimmy Choo shoes around the joint- whip out your

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2000…

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2000... do something! October 2001 Dear Sharon: I am a junior in high school and while searching the web, I saw your page related to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. My mother passed away from the illness two and a half years ago after a 12-year battle. My grandmother died of ovarian cancer and I have many other relatives, friends and neighbors who have been affected by cancer- especially breast cancer. Since Breast Cancer Awareness Month is October, I was wondering if it is possible to have some kind of awareness in my school for that month. Do you have any suggestions? I was wondering if money was collected could it be donated toward a cancer society? Thank you -- Striving For A Cure

Open your wallet to help those in need, then pick up a trend and strut your sentiment with pride, courage, unity, and strength. As a New Yorker, with each blow of the north wind, there's no escaping the September 11th tragedies. As a free world, we share in our collective grief. Ironically, Fall 2001 fashion's prescience reflects upon our patriotic inspirations. Squish Cellulite Away…

New Contender in Anti-Cellulite Treatment Arena Get your face out of that scrunch! Yes, it's the return of green eyeshadow and you will love it. Sponge Bob may be the hottest thing to hit the airwaves rightnow, but that doesn't make for a case to enter a Bikini Bottom look-alike contest. So we have… Globbed on the gook. Rubbed in the cream. Ingested the herbs. Loffahed our loins. Guzzled gallons of water. Rolled in coffee grounds. Spent thousands on salon treatments. Cursed relatives for passing on crummy genes. Who Can Turn the World On With Her Smile?…

Move Over "The Thinker," Here Comes Mary Richards. Taste The Hamptons-Recipe to take a bite out of style from The Barefoot Contessa. Okay, so she was a thirtyish TV icon thirtyish years ago. But Mary Richards still rules. That's Mary, the stylish lead character, in Mary Tyler Moore's eponymous named Seventies hit television show . No matter how ever so slightly dated the single, independent Mary now appears, there's always something modern about the way she wears her flares, belts her shirtdress, or how her hair flips. Most important, there's something completely empowering about the way she tosses her beret. The Wall Street Journal* writes- on it's front page- that a bronze statue of tam-tossing Mary Richards will be placed

Turn Back, Go Forward…

designer vintage clothing redux Vintage hungry fashionistas get what they want- designer reissues! When Mom tells you that she once had a dress just like that, she's not kidding. In effort to keep up with vintage starving fashionistas, European designers and activewear manufactures are "reissuing" their old styles in limited editions. Last month, Yves Saint Laurent Couture in Paris offered a numbered copy of Mr. Saint Laurent's famous 1966 "le smoking" women's tuxedo for a modern-day price of about $6,300, reports WWD. Sonia Rykiel is introducing a "Modern Vintage" collection for fall with a limited run of archival favorites. Adidas, Levi's, Lacoste, and Valentino will also be reissuing. Norma Kamali has been at it for a while. When other designers
