The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

Hattitude! Aretha Franklin, style…

Please don't go too mainstream with that Aretha Franklin inauguration hat Aretha Franklin Inauguration Hat | Hattitude. Please don't go too mainstream with that Aretha Franklin hat You know that hat. It's the hat that won't go away. The grey one with the oversized bow that sung out louder than its wearer at the inauguration. Well, it seems that the Aretha Franklin Inauguration hat has continued to take on a life of its own. The hat in question neither shocked or amazed me with in either its beauty or its showiness. I'm quite familiar with rather flamboyant handmade "Church Lady" hats worn with pride and gusto as the niece of an old time milliner. The New York Times once described

Hey mom, look what I bought!

Fashion show video to show latest shopping goodies… I stumbled upon this clip and think it is very charming. Margaret Maloney made a little “fashion show” video, with clever commentary, to show her mom some of the clothes that she bought herself this weekend. She even has some Anne Klein from Macy’s! “Yes, mom, I will wear something else over the arms,” tells us that mom does like to get her fashion two-cents in… sound familiar? Hey Margaret, you know you have it going on! “Clothes I purchased this weekend with Christmas money, gift certificates, and my own hard-earned cash. I made this video so my mother could see what I got.” Vimeo.

The right strapless bras to avoid slippage in a one-shoulder dress…

Tips to find the right strapless bras to avoid slippage in a one-shoulder dress How to find strapless bras with stay-put action I've become mesmerized with one-shoulder dresses but fear the inevitable; my girls will be out of control. I am not overly busty, but do need to wear a bra. How can I tell if a strapless bra will stay in place? (Toledo, OH) Love it or leave it, The First Lady's inaugural gown has created quite a buzz about a top spring trend- the strapless dress. Whilst most of us don't have the opportunity to wear a lavish one-shoulder gown, like the Naheen Kahn one pictured here, there are certainly plenty of short day to evening styles that

Michelle Obama: First Lady, first gown, first dance

Jason Wu is Smithsonian bound… While I love their style separately, the combination may not be as divine. Michelle Obama chose a very of-the-moment one-shoulder, white airy gown by Jason Wu as her much coveted First Lady ball gown. The sheer, floatiness of this cream, organza gown is probably quite amazing and spectacular in person– it undoubtedly will be a showstopper in the Smithsonian First Ladies Collection and a rather sublime choice historically. However, on television, in photos… not so much on the First Lady herself. Obama has a very keen sense of her own personal style and wears what both flatters her and what she feels comfortable wearing. Today, with all the pressure, I feel she feel prey to

Michelle Obama: First dress, First Lady

She’s gearing up to First Lady…   The Obamas made their first appearance for Inauguration Day with Michelle Obama looking rather regal in a golden yellow brocade coat and dress ensemble.   Yes the color is stunning on her. Not since Jackie Kennedy has anyone been excited about the style of the First Lady.   Perhaps, because not since Jackie Kennedy has a First Lady had much notable style! Let’s hope that this outfit is a respectful nod to the the day and not a representation of the Mrs’s Obama’s otherwise modern and clean chic appearance.   –January 20, 2008   >> READ: Michelle Obama Style: Today's power dressing

Narciso Rodriguez to the front again… Hope in modern elegance continues with Michelle Obama’s selection of a gorgeous, simple chic and timeless beige coat and slender skirt ensemble by Narciso Rodriguez for yesterday’s star-studded We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration At The Lincoln Memorial.
