What 21 Years in Business has taught me…and how it helps to overcome tech overwhelm!
One of the most frequent questions I get asked is, what I’ve learned from having an online business for 21 years.
There have been marketing trends, rebranding initiatives, systems updates, people coming and going, tech migrations and sales funnel shifts… just to name a few.
But the biggest regret, which comes from truly being in the trenches doing, is to overcomplicate things!
By all means nothing is easy, but the more tricked out you get, the greater the chance for complications later.
I primarily use an all-in-one integrated system now — Kartra and wordpress — which has simplified the way I work a lot.
Older assets don’t always play nice with updates, so if you’re starting out or starting over, pick a tech lane and stay with it (you’ll thank yourself later).
There is nothing more frustrating…
…than being sucked into a never ending vortex of tech issues, because the systems you’ve chosen don’t integrate seamlessly.
Let’s not even get started on website plugins that clash with each other and cause havoc on your site.
That’s the quickest way to cause tech overwhelm and make you want to run for hills or throw your computer out the nearest window.
Do yourself a favor and look for programs, systems and staff that you won’t outgrow, but will grow with you.
Document everything in very clear SOP’s that anyone can follow and be sure your team does the same.
Backtracking is a be-atch, but still be flexible to iterate in real time based on user feedback and engagement.
Start simple and then layer upon it … like investment dressing. 😉
Technology and systems are meant to serve you and your goals for your business, not the other way round.
Keep things simple right from the beginning and it will be easy to streamline the tech of your business.
This will free you up to invest your best energy in growing your business and dreaming about what’s next!
