How do you know how much you need to review to stay productive and avoid getting sucked in too deep on a task?
Going down the rabbit hole
has been a team theme with end of year tech reviews.
When the above photo memory popped up of my son, I decided to share how to save yourself from going too deep and getting off track from your goals.
01. First, decide the value of what you’re investigating.
How valuable is it to the user experience and to your bottom line?
If it’s not much, set a time limit and move on.
02. Is it a one off fix-and-forget type of task or instrumental to an evergreen asset?
If it’s not an instrumental asset worth improving or takes too long and doesn’t have a lasting impact… move on.
03. Are your findings consistent with someone’s sloppy work?
If so, it’s time to reevaluate your work relationship and perhaps saying ‘sayonara’ is a wise move.
Doing ‘rework’ to fix someone else’s work, wastes time and puts a spanner in your energy, focus and productivity flow.
04. Do you have regular reviews?
I know that at times things get extra hectic (e.g. during a launch), it’s easy to assume that loose ends are addressed.
They may or may not be and if the actual details are in someone’s head and not clearly documented, it’s a bitch to figure out.
Doing regular reviews helps you stay on top of your business assets and in the long run will save you so much time.
This step alone will steer you clear from needless stress and will help keep your productivity and focus on point.
