MY BLOG:

STYLE YOUR SUCCESS, LIVE YOUR DREAM...

The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

Models Without Hair and Makeup

And, they all woke up that way, not! One of my main reasons to launch Focus on Style as a syndicated column way back when was because as a stylist, I kept hearing myself reassure women that almost anyone can make the most of what they’ve got if they only know how to work it with the proper skills. Instead of feeling sorry for oneself that she was not born “amazing,” women need to understand the professional effort behind the illusion of beauty that they see in magazines and advertising pages and take note of the highly trained crew of hair, make-up, stylist, photographer, lighting, retoucher et al. which make the sometimes bland but highly photogenic model look drop-dead gorgeous!

Killing Me Softy With Your Song, Barney as Punishment

Calling the kettle black…   Little did we know that what has induced an insurmountable auditory cringe factor for us is punishment for others as well. Violators of a noise ordinance in Fort Lupton, Colorado are forced to listen to the likes of Barney the Purple Dinosaur and Barry Manilow as a form of punishment for blasting their stereos too loud. The judge says it’s a way to teach youngsters manners.   May we please add the Broadway soundtrack of Sarah Jessica Parker starring in Annie? Long before Sex and the City was a scratch in a Jimmy Choo innersole, SJP, a child actress with a lovely curly hairdo, screeched out the Sun Will Come Up Tomorrow… bet your bottom

Recipe for Beauty: Make-Up Junkie D.I.Y. Birthday Cake

MAC Inspired Birthday Cake for a Make-Up Junkie…   Guest Blogger, the actor Christopher Graves shares his amazing cake decorating tips to create a custom-themed birthday cake for the ultimate make-up junkie, my agent Marla. I've been baking for years now, but recently have begun to really challenge myself with each project. Each baking project starts with taking a specific trait or preference of the client and then exaggerating it. My favorite creation– so far– is this cake, which I made for my good friend Marla, who is addicted to collecting all sorts of make-up, particularly M.A.C. cosmetic products.   Recognizing that Marla's love for make-up as a really great cake-decorating platform brimming with many opportunities, I created a list

Anti-Aging Skincare Deals

I don’t mean for this to sound like a testimonial, but the little white jar with the silver cap has been keeping (at least I think so) my skin in check for years! Back when I was a stylist on an Avon shoot a Flintstone and a half years ago, the art director gifted me the prop jar of Anew (luckily, it contained the product) to take home. I was hooked. Later, as I covered beauty for the newswire and sampled almost every high-end to low-end beauty product that my skin could tolerate, I would often stray from the little white jar with the silver cap and wonder why I began to look lackluster.   Back and forth, on

Oslo Style: How to dress in snowy and slushy weather

Style tips to look cute in bad winter weather… This week has been far from glamorous when it comes to dressing! With temperatures dropping to minus-degrees, we have had both snow and rain most of the week in Oslo. And even though I am dreaming of California weather, every day before I wake up and quickly realize I need to dig deep into my closet for warm and comfy clothes it becomes quite ok that the season is changing. In just a few weeks, I will start my Christmas-shopping. I will listen to Christmas carols while I search for the perfect dress for the Christmas parties in December. However, despite of the colder weather I still manage to find some

Grunge Fashion: Part Deux…

Coffee Beans and Warm Leatherette Grunge Fashion: Part Deux, Coffee Beans and Warm Leatherette- it's all about designer Glam Grunge Seattle had it. Marc Jacobs put it on the fashion map. Kurt Cobain gave way to Kate Moss, and the early 90's are a lifetime away. Well, except in the land of the unwashed, granola-with-a-toke dudes and dudesses where it possibly never went away. Grunge is back in a big fashion way! This time it's glam grunge, if you will. More Alexander Wang with a dash of Balenciaga inspiration rather than a thrift shop overkill of fill-your-bag-for-five-bucks at the Haggle ‘N Hoard. Modern grunge one-ups the thrift shop rag version and is more about well-honed vintage mixed with good design
