The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

Make nice-nice to colored hair…

Clairol Nice N' Easy Intensive Treatment restores luster and condition We all know that wiggle in our walk. That proud of our self ‘cause we look so hot little strut that we get when we're feeling like we've got it all together. The kind of pulled together vibe that we feel when we catch our reflection in a store window, hair blowing, tresses all shiny, looking years more alive and vital, right after a fresh new hairstyle, and some loving color. Let's face it, besides the vibrant shade, the best thing about freshly colored hair, is its amazing shine. New cars have their smell, and newly tinted locks have that silky, glossy, childlike sheen…. that, yeegads, dulls over time. Fast-forward

Working the Red Carpet…

Oscar fashion tips to learn from oscar Fashion 2007- Celebrity style. Working the Red Carpet. Oscar fashion tips to learn from. Ever since Joan Rivers first squawked, “Who are your wearing?” what you are wearing at the Academy Awards catapulted itself out of bitchy coach potato gossip into a mainstream fashion marketing event. Frankly, I find the old days of anticipating what kooky outfit Cher will wear and who made a fashion blunder far more thrilling than the stylist cleansing of any major fashion faux pas.True to new fangled form, there weren't any big time fashion disasters at the79th Academy Awards. There were simply some dresses that one just wouldn't care for. Every event seems to need a fashion scapegoat

French Chic Fashion Tips – What to wear in Paris

What to wear in Paris can be a challenge. Follow my timeless French chic fashion tips and you can master Parisian style, where ever you are… French chic… What to wear in Paris (our Paris inspiration shopping guide is at the end of the page) Dear Sharon: I'm going to Paris for vacation and don't want to look like a tourist. I'm not familiar with what is acceptable to wear in such a chic city for touring around. I'm thinking the usual American customs of wearing shorts, T-shirts, sweats, tennis shoes, UGG's, or flip-flops probably won't go over well in Paris. What should I wear to a dinner cruise on the Seine or trolling about Paris to visit museums, shop,

What to wear while traveling to a different climate… Seasonless and comfy clothes to wear on a plane

What to wear while traveling to a different climate… Seasonless and comfy clothes to wear on a plane I am going on holiday in January-- leaving the UK in winter and arriving in Mexico in the hot sunshine. It's a 10- hour flight so I want to be comfortable while sitting on the plane but also look stylish and smart as we are flying 1st class. I appear young for my age as I'm 46 years old but usually pass for being 40. I don't want to dress too young, but not middle aged either. I'm pretty tall at 5'9" and have a slim figure. Please help me out with some of your fashion recommendations for what to wear while

Re: Fur Fury… The debate wags on

talk back Fur fury   I want to thank you for your article on fur in today's fashion. It's so nice to know that there are style magazines around that don't just sit about, idly accepting the fashion moguls' decrees without reacting to the ugly trade that is fur business. I seem to remember some ten years ago, how certain people stripped under the slogan "I'd rather be naked than wear fur", or something like that. Funny, how things change... Thanks again! S. S.-Flogstavägen , Sweden (who can't stop hoping for consumers around the world to realize the power they have)

Re: Tee for You? Choose to protect your freedom of choice

talk back... talk back   I'm beginning to feel like a yes-man, or rather yes-woman, but I can't help falling in love with this site. It is a rare find, you know, fashion and politics in one place. I just thought I'd drop you a line for good luck; may the freedom of choice remain in what is known as the land of freedom! All the best, S.S. (Uppsala, Sweden)

Take Khaki to the Next Level: Dress Tips for a Teacher

Khaki pants from asianscent.com
In Style- turn essential elements on how to update khaki pants Dear Sharon: I am an elementary Guidance Counselor. I struggle between being comfortable working with small children and looking professional for meetings. I like wearing khakis, loafers and a shirt, sweater or blazer daily. I would like to wear khakis everyday with different tops. Is this look too boring or uniform like? Could you give me some guidelines and/or suggestions? -Koo Koo for Khaki (Pataskala/Columbus, Ohio)   Dear Koo Koo: Ms. Prettypredictible orders the exact same thing for lunch everyday. She sits down at the restaurant counter, Delores, the ever-attentive waitress, acknowledges her, winks, and without a word exchanged, a tuna melt is served up for Ms. Prettypredictible to devour.

More about Metrosexuals….

Letters to the Editor readers talk back Dear Editor: What the hell is a metrosexual? Why do people think that if a man is well dressed and knows how to do it w/o the help of a woman or queer eye he himself must be gay or this metrosexual crap. I come from a long line of very well dressed men. Being black and growing up in the south you had to dress well just to get any kind of job, so my grandfather started the meticulous style of dressing that I am passing on to my son. We buy our clothes at a men's store and our shoes from a mens store or a shoe store. We do it

Letters to the Editor on uncovering the appeal of fake fur

Letters to the Editor Readers respond to our suggestion on recycling fur yesterday here: THANKS for the GREAT column /article about fake fur and how it is the way to go, rather than wearing real animal fur. Good job!! You have a new fan/devotee. -S.W. (Woodbury, CT) Yay! To Slamming Real Fur! I love your message of not be cruel to be cool. It shows to people that they don't have wear a real animal's coat to be "in", but that they can fake the real look. This is totally cool. Cruelty is not right and I think you should publish more articles like this. Thanx -O.S.(Linclon Park, MI) I agree that killing animals for their fur is creepy--and I get frustrated with fur
