STYLE YOUR SUCCESS, LIVE YOUR DREAM...

The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

Crop Pants, Culottes, Gaucho… whatever you want to call it, the mid length pant is perfect for transition to fall

Until the calendar officially changes, the weather may still be iffy warm but my mindset is totally in fall mode. Nothing says transition more than a pair of wide leg crop pants, gauchos, culottes or whatever name suits your fancy. The nuances of each are not as dramatic as the style power of the old school length that is new again. The mid length is great for when you're not quite ready to think about tights but want a little more coverage on bare legs. Style Tip: Balance the mid length pant with a chunkier heel ankle boot or shoe or a pair of sleek kicks or menswear flats.   Featured Theodasia Crop Pants from Club Monaco

Join me for the Shoefie Diary Instagram Challenge: Shop your shoe closet!

How many shoes do you own that you almost never wear? I know for me, it'a A LOT! Earlier this summer, I started a little shoe challenge for myself. Every day, I would make the effort to pull out a pair of shoes that I forgot about (I'm a shoe fiend) and work them into my wardrobe again.  To keep track, I'd take a fast #shoefie (that's a selfie for shoes) to document it. What happened was that since I have a tendency to dress from the shoe up, I started to come up with more varied outfits based on my footwear. Now, mind you, as a work from home entrepreneur, I usually wear fairly casual clothes that I style

Stylist Advice: What to wear in New York + not look like a tourist

Dear Sharon:  I'll be visiting New York next month and staying in Greenwich Village. I'm there for a wedding but concerned about  dresses and street clothes for walking around NYC and what to wear to visit friends. I'm 46 years old, 5'6",  size 4 and have a ruler shape. I'm very thin now after an illness and learning to dress my new body. Any advice I appreciate greatly! (A. via Fashion Advice) >> MORE: What to Wear posts Welcome to my city and around my neighborhood! Hope you're feeling well. Simple, sophisticated, clean, and modern always looks chic in a cosmopolitan city. What to wear in New York is really about understanding the classic lines that flatter you and tweaking it with your

Closet Overhaul 101: What about the clothes you don’t wear

1-2-3, PURGE! I was talking to some of my mom friends the other day about making the best use of what we already own.  A few of us got together and the conversation about spring cleaning turned towards rethinking ways to coordinate or style up the clothes, shoes, accessories, and bags that sit in our closet and never really get worn, or even lost in the mix. So, the big question became a riff about the clothes you don't wear rather than the ones do wear, and why not. The Big Ouch: One of the stacks from my recent purge of shoes that don't feel quite right after wearing them for an hour or so. Yes, there are absolutely a

How to Look Ageless OR 9 Geezer Magnets That Read Old and Why to Avoid Them

My parents visting a cousin's house back when they were still engaged.
It's my birthday again (better to have them then not too), and I still feel the same way. Although, I conveniently can't remember which birthday it is. Shhh, don't tell me, sometimes ignorance is bliss. Enjoy this reprise of some solid advice to keep that youthful spirit! --S.H. It's my birthday today, woot, woot for me!  You think how to look ageless doesn't cross my mind? I've gotta admit that when I think of the numeric add up for my age I feel a little, ah, "removed" from it. Of course, I remember the year that I was born but I try not to dwell on the actual age "number" as it becomes more of a burden to live up

Palm Springs Style – Timeless style inspiration is greater than what’s in your closet!

Elvis and Priscilla Presley's Honeymoon Hideaway in Palm Springs
Palm Spings in the  style mix, baby! It's been a throwback, go forward time around here. If you follow me on Facebook, Instagram, or even Twitter, you probably saw some snaps I shared from my trip to Palm Springs. Initially, I was in Southern California for a high level business conference... because we are never beyond learning new ways to stretch our brand muscle. Then, The Hubs and Mr. Poodle joined me for some local exploring. [raw] My early morning view... Cannes Do Chic- White is summer’s new black

I'll Have What She's Having: A summer romance with my dry cleaner White is definitely on trend for summer. But I have to admit a slow love to ditch my go-to black beyond white t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, and classic, crisp white shirts (follow the links for style tips). Maybe it was last week in the California sunshine where I lost count on the plethora of white jeans,  but these Cannes Do Chic snaps certainly make the case for adding something white to your summer wardrobe. My favorite red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival  offers plenty of styling inspiration for every occasion by way of (clockwise) Cate Blanchett in a Giorgio Armani white suit, Chrystele Saint Louis Augustin in a midriff-baring bralette and

Bell Bottom Flare Jeans, yeah baby, they’re looking so right again

Instant Style Uplift: For both your butt and spirits! If you're looking for a quick style update that's right for summer and beyond, look no further than a pair of bell bottom flare jeans. The wide leg jean is creeping back into style and looks and so right. Pair them with some wedge espadrilles for instant height, your  platform sandals to raise your butt, and if you're leggy, a pair of Birks for off-handed charm. Even I, miss fear of white pants, bought a pair of chalky flares and have all intention of wearing them with a tush-covering top. They look so chic when paired with a classic sharp shouldered blazer from now into early fall. I am partial to a

How to Wear It Week! How to style a white T-shirt

This week’s summer spotlight is How to Wear It Week. Let's look at different ways to wear everybody's wardrobe stable. 3 ways to dress up or dress down your favorite piece of clothing I don't know about you but I spend a good amount of time wearing classic T-shirts. They are easy, timeless, and I love the utilitarian edge that holds everything else together. If there's one workhorse item in your closet, it should be a white T-shirt. Be it designer or the kind that comes out of a pack. One of the ladies in a marketing group that I'm in asked me how to style T-shirts. Nicely, maybe for work and casual. So here goes it, in this installment of how to wear it,

What Color Shoe to Wear With What: The (Non) Definitive Guide to mixing and matching shoes to your outfit

If I could only count how many times I have been asked, "what color shoe to wear with...?" I'd probably run out of digits. Here's the thing, there really is no, that's right zippo, answer on what shoe color you should wear with what color outfit. In style, there's no blanket cookie-cutter answer, but a combination of elements that work in harmony to look great or not so great together. Think about shades, textures, hues, pattern, cut, balance, shoe style, design, mood, and how it all comes to together on you as a whole to determine what the "right" color should be. There are more or less guides that you can observe, but there is no right answer until you
