The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

First Sarah Jessica Parker, now Blake Lively sports the fugliest Loubes

Christian Louboutin "Alex"
Help, I'm a celebrity and I'll wear anything for attention! I'm sorry, but in my opinion, you really MUST be a fashion victim to find these "lion paw" shoes remotely attractive.  We're not really fans of  designer damning around here, but these Christian Louboutin "Alex" pumps are for the birds. People see doctors to cure themselves of this First, Sarah Jessica Parker sported them in Moscow this summer and now Blake Lively is wearing them on the set of Gossip Girl. All I can say is that it's the one year anniversary of my foot surgery and I don't even think my feet looked that bad post op.  RadarOnline says they cost about $5,000.... Would you wear these? >> SHOP: Animal Prints

Sheer For Day Or Night? Emily Blunt Does It Right…

I’ll Have What She’s Having: Work wonders in a sheer & maxi combination Actress Emily Blunt looked radiant in a decadent art-deco inspired beaded Gucci dress at a recent LACMA event in Los Angeles while donning an ingenious combination of a sheer panel paired with a dramatic maxi length.  And while heavy beading, a fitted shape and a sheer panel below the knee reads as too many ideas for one dress on paper, her Gucci number works thanks to a simple, non-revealing tank cut top half and tonal black bead work. But Blunt looking va-va-voom in a dress on the red carpet is not the only thing we'd like to point out here since it also brings light to making

How to Look Sexy and Modern? Try some well-placed slits like Eva Green in Alexander McQueen

Eva Green an AW11 black split sleeve dress and Pre AW11 leopard print peep toe shoes by Alexander McQueen to the ‘The Rum Diary’ London
I'll Have What She's Having: Streamlined and bold slits in just the right places There's something about actress Eva Green's smart sexiness that reminds us of  the raw style of Italian actresses back in the 1950's via Veneto days. It's a control over non-fussiness and an emphasis on dynamic sex appeal and sultriness, best mastered in sleek, non revealing lines. Case in point: Eva's on trend, but not trendy, double-slit & slit sleeve Alexander McQueen LBD from AW11. Oh, and those luscious leopard print peep toe shoes also by Alexander McQueen.  WATCH: How to Accessorize a LBD and more LBD posts Smoldering liner and red lips keep the look graphic, clean and bold We saw the sexy open back slit on Amber

Lisette Model ‘Reflections’

On a recent trawl through Chelsea, New York's art gallery packed westside neighborhood, came the discovery of Bruce Silverstein Gallery's “Reflections: The Expressionist Origins of Lisette Model,” an inspiring visual retrospective featuring an edited collection of the late artist's work. Model's use of reflective layers to combine cityscapes and civilians candidly shuffling about through New York City during the 40's offers a romantic, nostalgia inducing and even slightly haunting look at the city that also sheds light on the work of some of her most renowned students, Diane Arbus and Peter Hujar. Paired with works on paper by artists including Max Beckmann and Lyonel Feininger, and accompanied by a recording of Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire,” the gallery's back room is dedicated to postwar

Bette Midler Auction- Costumes and Possessions from the Divine Miss M

Bette Midler Auction
You could probably clue in that I wasn't a generic kind of kid when I had to reach to "someone" I admired for a school project and that someone was Bette Midler... fresh out of her bath house days and immersed in campy chutzpah. Honestly, I think my mom was more impressed at the time that a large 9x12 envelope from Ms. Midler's agent/manager arrived in the mail addressed to me with clips and autographed photos of her Divineness.... my mom never let me forget how "valuable" those items are, and they were never discarded but buried around here somewhere. I still love the Divine Miss M and her couture campiness and if I were her, every last bedazzled and platformed

Kim Kardashian’s divorce news, is it the beginning of the end on celebrity products?

Kardashian Kollection at Sears
In the wake of Kim Kardashian's divorce announcement and her pr-powered mega wedding event, one has to wonder how her divorce will impact the way consumers see her brand. Could this possibly be the beginning of the end on fashion and beauty products built on celebrity brand power? Let's think celebrity products-  does it really ever work? Celebrity Beauty- Amber Heard Updates Hollywood Glamour in Jean Paul Gaultier and Bright Pink Lipstick

I'll Have What She's Having: The right dose of color and simplicity Even though the tired term 'Old Hollywood Glamour' opens the door to a snotty case of pungent remarks for us, it does however come to mind every so often when we spot an actress bringing it to us completely updated. Case in point was Amber Heard at the New York premiere for ‘The Rum Diary’ at the Museum of Modern Art wearing Jean Paul Gaultier. What worked was the surprising elegance of seeing a striking beauty covered head-to-toe in a pleated however figure defining black maxi dress that was simple in detail minus when she turned to reveal an open slit back. While we admire that the only glimpse of skin was saved for
