Cheap Chic Stylist Advice: Is fast fashion the end of good taste?

Sometimes less is not more when it comes to a price tag. As I'm sitting outside on what is a very warm day, all I can see is a sea of fashionista fiascos: Ill-fitting maxi dresses that can passoff as nightgowns, garish prints, short shorts and rompers on girls both too old and too out of shape to publicly prance around with their rears hanging out, jersey body-con dresses clinging in a way that even the Shore-ettes would think was cheesy, pastel sheers that look like a shower curtain from Great Aunt Tilly's trailer, and the de rigueur touch of polyester neon (sorry, you shouldn't wear fabric that looks like it would smell!).Eeeecccch. Yet, I'm sure that every fashionista fiasco squealed,

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has made wearing pantyhose mainstream, and even chic!
Can I wear stockings in beginning of September or is there a time of year when I can wear nude stockings? My legs are horrific... I am 58 and have a lot of marks and spider veins. I had a housecleaning business for 18 years, so my knees are discolored. What is the best shade of hosiery to wear? Is it nude or  should the hose color to match dress--- with closed shoes, of course?  (via Fashion Advice) >>MORE: Stylist Advice and Pantyhose  Trends may come and go but what looks best on the wearer is ALWAYS the most important, regardless of the season. While nude pantyhose has been off the charts for a while, Kate Middleton's penchant for properness put nude hose back in

When to wear flip-flops? Jessica Alba gets it…

Stylist Advice: Can I wear flip-flops in the city? Oh yes, the "when to wear flip-flops" in place of proper shoes debate continues... Frankly, the idea of wearing flip-flops as shoes in the city wrecks my nerves. UNLESS, you are heading back from a pedicure as Jessica Alba is caught doing in New York.  At a certain age, it is no longer cute or stylish to wear your beach shoes like a regular pair of shoes. It doesn't read trendy, but reads lazy. >> SHOPPING GUIDE: Cute Flats  There, I've said it, flip flops are not PROPER shoes. No way, no how. They have most definitely had a trendy moment, and may have even morphed into a hipster way of

Age-Appropriate Casual Chic for the Silver Hair Set: How To Shop To Master An Ageless Stylish Wardrobe

An ageless look from Banana Republic
Sometimes age-appropriate casual chic can be a tough call to shop for... a FocusOnStyle reader shares how to work around it...  Thanks for the article/photos on Susan Sarandon. Any advice for a retired 60 year-old female graphic artist, (60)? I like to be somewhat trendy/edgy while still being age appropriate and doing it on a budget. I've begun a capsule of sorts (turquoise, charcoal and some violet), and it helps a lot, but if you could recommend basic pieces one should have for a casual wardrobe that's stylish I would appreciate it. Our pretty reader I am petite, about a size 10/12 and gain weight at my waist/midriff. I don't know where to shop. Chico's is usually too glitzy for me, Jjill is

French Chic at a Certain Age: A well-cut trench coat a la Patricia Kaas

Patricia Kaas
Let's be frank: There comes a time when fussy becomes unfashionably fatiguing and plain is boringly aging. >> Day Two of the three-part FoS series Age-Approriate French Chic At A Certain Age But, pairing a well-cut trench coat and sultry smokey lined eyes, is a time-tested fashion recipe that never spoils! Take, for instance, French actress and chanteuse Patricia Kaas who understands the understated elegance of a lightweight, well-cut trench coat- a hallmark in dressing with French chic style. It's not any ordinary trench, but one that wraps in a way that always creates a sexy silhouette without being vulgar or tricked up. It's flow is more dressed up than the basic double-breasted trench coat, yet it's not overwhelming on her frame. The

French Chic at a Certain Age: The power of black a la Juliette Binoche… not so basic!

Basic black becomes beautiful black when it's worn in the right French Chic way... It's funny how there are photos of us that almost instantly look dated and others that have timeless perfection. What we are wearing plays a huge part in what sustains looking chic and vital rather than overdone and garish. Take for instance, the style power and endurance of perennially black clad Juliette Binoche and Malgorzarta Szumowska pictured here. >> Day One of the three-part FoS series Ageless & Age-Appropriate French Chic At A Certain Age Let's think about this: every season there is a trend color; something eye-catching to refuel your need to buy something new. You wear that color. Like this season's trendy shade of coralish-roseish-tangerine formerly rightly reserved

Senior Style: 65 Things to Do When You Retire, My Essay On How To Master Your Look (book excerpt)

When editor Mark Evan Chimsky asked me to write a 'Master Your Look' essay for the anthology 65 Things to Do When You Retire, 65 Notable Achievers on How to Make the Most of the Rest of Your Life (Sellers Publishing), I couldn't refuse. Besides having the opportunity to share my senior style tips for a time in your life when coveting the latest it thing is not as relevant as revitalizing your most age-appropriate personal best, my essay would be in the book along such esteemed notables as my feminist idol Gloria Steinem, former President Jimmy Carter, Jane Fonda, John E. Nelson, (What Color Is Your Parachute?), and a host of other experts and achievers on how to make the most of the rest of

Stylist Advice: It’s not style but some fugly fashion fad; don’t succumb

The gross purposely exposed bra
What Not To Wear | Spring Fugly Fashion Don'ts There will probably be someone who doesn't like this. That's ok. I was looking through a spring lookbook for a celebutard turned designer, who will remain nameless, and each outfit pictured was kowtowing to some amped up commercial fashion fad trend, that probably should never have taken off in the first place. But there ya go, a pseudo celeb wears something, the pr sends out a photo, bloggers pick it up, and every girl who can find a parking spot at the mall, is seen wearing it and wearing it and wearing it. That's fine when the follower with a passion for fashion (an expression that drives me mad) is a young girl.

How To (Not) Wear a Faux Fur Vest- the trend is trickier than it seems

What looks pretty on the model can be rather tricky on an everyday woman
Faux fur vests are probably one of the hottest fashion trends of the moment. The thing is that they are also rather tricky to wear. If you are not careful, you could look like a wild hairy beast that took over the mall. Not to mention that fur vests are not the most practical way to stay warm on anything other than a mild day. Let's get the faux fur vest trend right. Here we have a lovely, chic model wearing the Quotation: Sanctuary Original Natalie Faux Fur Vest from Bloomingdales, picture left above. To the right, we have a real woman buried in one too many trends of the moment, including a faux fur vest. Our real lady in the photo

Fashion Emergency: Help! I’m in a fashion rut and only 22!

Short torso, long legs, no style... oh my! I would love to be proud of what I wear but it's hard to feel attractive in my comfort zone of T-shirts and jeans. I also struggle with trying to find a style that I feel is age appropriate for me at 22 years old and not too young or too old. I've never considered myself to be very stylish and I tend to stay away from current fads, like gladiator sandals for instance. The brand I rely most heavily on is the Gap and while I'm attracted to the unique style of clothing at Urban Outfitters, I generally feel too lost to piece anything together. If I had to describe the type

Pilates instructor needs fashion help to find a flattering fit: How to dress for an athletic frame

Let's help this Pilates instructor figure out what to wear to work to look chic and flatter her athletic build I have been a Pilates instructor for 15 years and constantly trying to find interesting and comfortable tops that flatter my figure and suit my almost Bohemian style. I'm 53 years old, 5'7', and weigh in at 155 pounds. I feel that tunic length tops work best on my figure, particularly ones that have rounded hems, long sleeves, and a boat neck or ballet neckline. I have a heck of timefinding these type of tops or even longer shirts with a shirttail hemline—it seems that they are always straight across the bottom. I just need tops that are long sleeved,
