Fashion Night Out New York- A Look Back

From fire eaters to blow outs... a photo journey Fashion took to the streets Friday night in Fashion Night out, a celebration to kick-off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. And joined with it was everyone from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Jersey crowding the streets of Soho and bouncing in and out of a multitude of open parties in stores and galleries. DJ's spun, projectors flashed edgy indie flickerings, champagne and vodka drinks were abound as well as hot celebrity showcases at some spots. Throw in a sexy fire dancer in sequins and a praying mantis on stilts, and that was Friday's Fashion Night Out. -- Alix Kivlin Take a look... prince & mercer frilly girls Fire! It's Alix! Target Lights Up New York and Affordable Fashion in Spectacular Show

Target's Kaleidoscopic Fashion Spectacular at the Standard Hotel She's baaaack! yes, Alix Kivlin is back from her year long trip around the world and in full fashion gear... we'll get her to share her global tales one hemisphere at a time later, but for now, she's in a New York state of mind. -S.H. The fashion scene put a lit-up, psychedelic twist on the fashion show concept with Target's Kaleidoscopic Fashion Spectacular at the Standard Hotel. The ordinarily modern and sleek Standard Hotel turned into an LED disco ball with one entire side of the building being used as a light show flashing and flickering along to music pumping into the night. Models on stage Not only were the lights

Hula Hoop Mania: Hooping gets its sexy on

Travel Hoop by Hoopnotica, fun and portable fitness that is pretty sexy too! When Marisa Tomei said the best thing to achieve her super-hot stripper body for her role in “The Wrestler” was partly due to hula hooping, it was time to spill the beans as the resident hula hoop fanatic! It may be the latest fitness craze, but I have been hooping for years and consider it my leisure sport– leisure suit, not included! I can attest to its many benefits - I had the best abs of my life this summer much of which I do attribute to adding daily backyard hooping to my fitness regime. Hooping is also very meditative. Once you get going it’s like being

NY Fashion Week: Ports 1961 fashion show review

PORTS 1961| Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Inspired by exotic India the Ports 1961 fall 2009 collection was beaming with rich color, luxe fabrications, metallics and attention to the tiny details in accessories and overall construction. The fashion show theme was set on the runway with a delightful live band playing lively middle eastern music while the models walked. The models’ eyes were lined with dark kohl pencil and their hair was tied in a very tousled, romantic braid - this overall setting created a warm and exotic mood, taken away to India! >> See our complete runway coverage and fashion show photos The clothing was had a modern take on tradition with some of the cuts, the

NY Fashion Week: Chado Ralph Rucci fashion show review

CHADO RALPH RUCCI | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… It was like being in an Asia-inspired Blade Runner! Uber futuristic, very slick, the show could have been an action movie, heavily structured garments and lots of technical cut outs, very dark, mostly black, but behind it all was this calming Zen aura that softened the collection. Once again we are seeing solid fabrics but with amazing texture and pattern within. Some of these fabrics I swear were brought back from 2020, they were very high tech looking and again the ultra mod look strengthened that. (See Alix’s photo gallery of the fashion show below) >> We’ve been loving this collection for awhile; please see our past Chado Ralph

NY Fashion Week: Zac Posen fashion show review

ZAC POSEN | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… This was the most stunning production I have laid eyes on all Fashion Week and in general, one of the most classically beautiful shows I have ever seen!!! The scene is this: dark runway with 5 grand pianos lined up down the center, spotlights shine on 5 women and men, dressed gowns straight out of Amadeus, as they walk to their pianos and begin to play, their own part, together as a whole, the lights slowly spread as the first model appears in a gown circa 1770… but in fact it is 2009. Immediately you are transported in time watching each piece come out - rich brocade fabrics and satins,

NY Fashion Week: Rebecca Taylor fashion show review

REBECCA TAYLOR | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… A warm colored presentation of feminine pieces mixed with some edge and balanced with an air of innocence best describes the Rebecca Taylor fashion show for fall 2009. I picture these pieces on a cute, mousy girl at an art gallery opening sipping red wine, a little bit quirky, very creative and intuitive, she stares at the art with question but really she is wondering why Wendy ever left Neverland. >> More Mercedes Benz Fashion Week photos of the Rebecca Taylor fashion show The soft, warm colors are a nice relief after a lot of black and grey and they are matched with blue tights or socks and smudged blue

NY Fashion Week: Custo Barcelona fashion show review

CUSTO BARCELONA | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Love Custo!!! I realize Custo Barcelona clothing may come off as ridiculous to some, it makes no sense, but that is what is to love about it!!! Wild patterns, a million colors all at once, texture mixing and playing no where near the rule book - fashion on acid - doesn’t that sound amazing?! >> More Mercedes Benz Fashion Week photos of the Custo Barcelona fashion show   There was a lot of shine - very hairy, sparkly fabrics, sequins and beading, metallic brocades, shiny satin and once again this beaded strand material similar to what I saw at Thuy. It was fabric upon fabric upon fabric to create tons

NY Fashion Week: Thuy fashion show review

Thuy- Fall 2009 Collection, video below… Fashion is not always taken at face value. Sometimes you need to give it a bit of time and understand that taste is very subjective. I’m more of a realist than trendy fabulousista when it comes to flattering silhouettes. Ok, I won’t lie, my first impression of this collection was not a good one, but by the end of the show I acknowledged it means absolutely nothing if I personally don’t like it, but it means everything it I can look past my taste and see what has been created and the whether it has been created well. This line was indeed well made. My personal issue was that many of the pieces were

NY Fashion Week: William Rast fashion show review

William Rast | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Yet another designer going with the rock ‘n roll theme– this time via Justin Timberlake– but this so far has been my favorite interpretation. Yes we are feeling the 80’s, yes we are feeling the punk rock, but in addition we are feeling the grunge / hipster vibe which helps to tone it down a bit and gives a sort of all American look. First off the William Rast collection is 70% denim which I love! Denim with studs, denim with fringe, denim with black lace, black denim with zippers…..it’s never ending how it got all tricked up. But tricked up so it does not look ridiculous, nearly every piece

NY Fashion Week: Miss Sixty fashion show review

Miss Sixty | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Rock ‘n roll heavily weighted with an 80’s and punk feel set the tone for Miss Sixty. Denim washes had a huge range from classic blues to greys and black of course, but the washing techniques were far from average - some were heavily bleached, others were very stone washed giving an allover crinkle texture reminding you of your favorite pair of jeans in 1985, colored tints and resin washes, fortunately not so much of the shredding we are currently seeing everywhere. As far as denim styling, I personally was pleased to see the skinny jean still maintaining it’s power, especially with glam rock appliques and over-sized hardware. On the

NY Fashion Week: Lela Rose fashion show review

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week- Lela Rose, Fall 2009 Collection… Finally a show with color to keep our recession spirits up and remind women that party attire should indeed be fun. There is also a fantastic play of texture - chunky woven tweeds with a hint of metallic, shiny silks mixed with sequins, flowing silk chiffon as well as stiff and shiny satin. The shimmer caught everyone’s eye, nothing was flat and it allowed for a lot of movement when on the body. The ombre coloring had a modern romantic effect especially on the pieces that had ombre color stripes from sequins. (photo gallery below) >> More Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Lela Rose Fashion show photos Some very simple cocktail dresses
