Fashion Night Out New York- A Look Back

From fire eaters to blow outs... a photo journey Fashion took to the streets Friday night in Fashion Night out, a celebration to kick-off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. And joined with it was everyone from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Jersey crowding the streets of Soho and bouncing in and out of a multitude of open parties in stores and galleries. DJ's spun, projectors flashed edgy indie flickerings, champagne and vodka drinks were abound as well as hot celebrity showcases at some spots. Their global backpacking adventure to all points exotic took a very chic turn when they stopped off to sample the custom clothing and shoes from the tailors and cobblers in H?i An, a city located in the South Central Coast of Vietnam. PORTS 1961| Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Inspired by exotic India the Ports 1961 fall 2009 collection was beaming with rich color, luxe fabrications, metallics and attention to the tiny details in accessories and overall construction. The fashion show theme was set on the runway with a delightful live band playing lively middle eastern music while the models walked. CHADO RALPH RUCCI | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… It was like being in an Asia-inspired Blade Runner! Uber futuristic, very slick, the show could have been an action movie, heavily structured garments and lots of technical cut outs, very dark, mostly black, but behind it all was this calming Zen aura that softened the collection. Once again we are seeing solid fabrics but with amazing texture and pattern within. Some of these fabrics I swear were brought back from 2020, they were very high tech looking and again the ultra mod look strengthened that. ZAC POSEN | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… This was the most stunning production I have laid eyes on all Fashion Week and in general, one of the most classically beautiful shows I have ever seen!!! The scene is this: dark runway with 5 grand pianos lined up down the center, spotlights shine on 5 women and men, dressed gowns straight out of Amadeus, as they walk to their pianos and begin to play, their own part, together as a whole, the lights slowly spread as the first model appears in a gown circa 1770… but in fact it is 2009. REBECCA TAYLOR | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… A warm colored presentation of feminine pieces mixed with some edge and balanced with an air of innocence best describes the Rebecca Taylor fashion show for fall 2009. CUSTO BARCELONA | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Love Custo!!! I realize Custo Barcelona clothing may come off as ridiculous to some, it makes no sense, but that is what is to love about it!!! Thuy- Fall 2009 Collection, video below… Fashion is not always taken at face value. Sometimes you need to give it a bit of time and understand that taste is very subjective. I’m more of a realist than trendy fabulousista when it comes to flattering silhouettes. Ok, I won’t lie, my first impression of this collection was not a good one, but by the end of the show I acknowledged it means absolutely nothing if I personally don’t like it, but it means everything it I can look past my taste and see what has been created and the whether it has been created well. William Rast | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Yet another designer going with the rock ‘n roll theme– this time via Justin Timberlake– but this so far has been my favorite interpretation. Yes we are feeling the 80’s, yes we are feeling the punk rock, but in addition we are feeling the grunge / hipster vibe which helps to tone it down a bit and gives a sort of all American look. Miss Sixty | Runway Fall 2009 Collection-Mercedes Benz Fashion Week… Rock ‘n roll heavily weighted with an 80’s and punk feel set the tone for Miss Sixty. Denim washes had a huge range from classic blues to greys and black of course, but the washing techniques were far from average - some were heavily bleached, others were very stone washed giving an allover crinkle texture reminding you of your favorite pair of jeans in 1985, colored tints and resin washes, fortunately not so much of the shredding we are currently seeing everywhere. As far as denim styling, I personally was pleased to see the skinny jean still maintaining it’s power, especially with glam rock appliques and over-sized hardware. On the

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week- Lela Rose, Fall 2009 Collection… Finally a show with color to keep our recession spirits up and remind women that party attire should indeed be fun. There is also a fantastic play of texture - chunky woven tweeds with a hint of metallic, shiny silks mixed with sequins, flowing silk chiffon as well as stiff and shiny satin. The shimmer caught everyone’s eye, nothing was flat and it allowed for a lot of movement when on the body.
