The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

Male Makeover, Not… Offended by disgusting appearance of co-worker

I am slated to open an office in a prestigious location with a co-worker coming up in September. I have long had issues with his grooming, yet he seems completely unaware and when I drop slight and, at times, bold hints--he thinks it's a joke. I don't want to make you sick, but it's everything! This guy is going to meetings with the public and I am HORRIFIED. He is a walking dork: the same haircut with all the same cowlicks from when he was 5, long hair (with attachments) coming from his nose and ears, clothes that do not fit (pants too short and too old), chapped lips and hands, and spittle always at the corner of his lips.

Gloss over?

The lip shtick that sticks  A little lip gloss goes a long way- that's exactly why we're a trifle shy to get divine with some extra shine: • There's that goopy feeling that makes one wonder if their lips aren't being beamed up as some alien suction device. • The glop residue catches to our front teeth at the most inopportune times- like in the midst of a good flirt. • One sip of a beverage and the glass looks like a forensic dream come true. • A brisk breeze cleverly affixes our hair to our kisser and until we head downwind for some mercy to unhinge ourselves. • There's the fear that too much lip shine would give us

Beat Visible Pantylines… Tips for smooth moves

Beat Visible Pantylines… Tips for smooth moves Every time I wear any trousers or tight skirts, the lines of my panties can be seen. It looks terrible. Have you any suggestions? If I wore a thong or g-string would that help? I am a bit reluctant to wear thongs as I might be a bit old for that (I'm 40+) but I'm open to advice.(Dublin, Ireland) While wearing a well-fitting thong or g-string would certainly produce a smoother rear view, it only works if your rear is smooth to begin with. It's not about age, but more about skin-tone when you are wearing skimpy undies. You sound less than confident about having a late start to wearing thongs, so let's

Paris and Ashton Dress Down…

Who better to see strutting underwear as fashion? I see Paris. I see France. How cute is the girl at Sundance in what usually is worn with underpants? Ashton Kutcher is so adorable. Paris Hilton looks good in anything [nothing]. Heck, they both know how to dress down, Hollywood style. Glad those trucker caps are a fad of the past. This time it's the fine gauge of a designer long john button-down that adds the spice. The modern way to look cool on the quick is to pair a simple Henley undershirt with something unexpected. In Ashton's case, it rocks when worn in contrast with an understated elegant tailored suit. It gushes “I plucked my boyfriend's T” sexy when Paris

Fur Fury…

The debate wags on As a vast amount of designers showed looks sprinkled with the glamour of fur in their fall 2004 collections, let's not forget from whence this fashion came. Inside the 7th On Sixth tents at the Olympus Fashion Week, fox prevailed as the fur du jour. Outside the tents, the folks at PETA managed to demonstrate a more than unsettling picture that most would rather ignore. Let the images speak for themselves. The choice is yours. --February 20, 2004

Shopping secrets to bargain hunt your way to top style…

Money-saving insider tips for shopping on a budget Dear Sharon:I want to look like a model but I don't have the moo-la! I need great ways for finding trendsetting clothes without spending a lot of money. Please, can you help me? --Style Saver (San Antonio, TX) Dear Style Saver: Never forget that great style is all in the mix, not in the price tag! Where you purchase your clothes and how much they cost you is irrelevant to the final outcome. Just because you spend a fortune on an outfit, does not guarantee a look that's right for you. Ironically, most of the models and ôin the businessö fashionistas who are wearing the cutting-edge clothes that you crave didn't necessarily

Wearing velvet to a wedding in March… What’s the right time to switch to spring and stop wearing velvet

Wearing velvet to a wedding in March… What's the right time to switch to spring and stop wearing velvet Is it ok to wear a black velvet pant suit to a wedding in early March? The wedding is at 4:30 reception is at 6:30. It's a rather 'formal' wedding. (Lake Zurich, IL) That's a tricky one. Velvet is most often considered a winter fabric. However, a softer, bare silhouette can go the mile into warmer times, as would a velvet jacket over jeans on a casual chic chilly spring night. Early March is still technically winter, so the appropriateness of the fabric really depends on the weather and the style of the suit. If the wedding is in the south,

Winter dress tips to be the ultimate Ice Queen

How to look sleek when it's zero degrees... How to look sleek when it's zero degrees… Winter dress tips to be the ultimate Ice Queen Do you have any suggestions on what to wear to a formal wine tasting where some walking around the city between dining and tasting occurs? Is it acceptable and normal to see women in fishnets, sexy dresses and heels in very cold temperature? Or, am I more likely to see women in dressy slacks and sequin tops? And, how about sweaters or shawls? I am assuming that the apartment will be rather chilly. I want to look sleek with zero degree temps and really appreciate the help. (Great Falls, VA) Dressing up when it's frigid

Nail It?

Quick stick nails for an instant manicure Quick stick nails for an instant manicure   Sometimes you feel like a glamourella. Sometimes, you don't. Why not succumb to your inner Miss Kim and bling-bling up your mani for the night or for the week? Caught with crummy nails on the way out to a big meeting? Paste on a perfect French manicure in the cab. Life is short, there's no need to spend it at the manicurist. Sure, there have been fake nails around for years, but they usually look too phony and are pretty high maintenance to keep up. The press-on kind never look that real either and barely stay on to boot. Finally, we discovered a nail secret

Get glam: too many parties, too little time…

How to put some sizzle in your style on the quick Dear Sharon:I don't mean to complain, but I'm booked-out for the rest of the holiday season and it's causing me to get into a panic about my wardrobe. I'm recently divorced and want to make the most of the social scene when it's available. There seems to never be that much time to think about what I'm going to wear and definitely not enough time or money to buy something different for each party or event. I want to look fabulous, but not too high-maintenance, just sexy and fun. Maybe, I'll find a new boyfriend for the new year. --Social Butterfly (Corpus Christi, TX)   Dear Social Butterfly: Let's focus

Ponytail Plus…

The simple, chic hairstyle There are days when you just can't get the minute to fix your hair. And then, there are times when the nonchalant ponytail is just what makes an otherwise elaborate outfit look simple and polished. We're not asking you to be totally mindless and stick a style forsaken scrunchy in your hair. We are telling you to put a little thought into something that looks completely non-fussy. For a while now, celebrities like Gwyneth and Jennifer have slicked their hair into a neat, polished ponytail and used a strip of hair to wrap around the elastic band. Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein favored models with loose, low ponytails with that same wrapped finish in their spring

Shoes, for me, are the worst thing to buy. I never know what styleto get and the wrong style can make or break an outfit. Senior style for forgoing pantyhose: Adjust your fashion sense for your age

Adjust your fashion sense for your age… Senior style for forgoing pantyhose Here's a spin on that proverbial chestnut: hose worn with open shoes. I'm old, and my legs show it. My old gams look much better in hose, obviously. Hose does for my legs what Ultima II does for my face! So, I know pantyhose worn with open shoes is a no-no, but I've seen old girls like me without hose, and it ain't pretty! Is there any advice you can offer? (Rochester, NY) Sweetie, you make me chuckle. Age certainly does bring wisdom in your case. You are smart enough to know that a good part of having style is the common sense that some fashion trends do
